Government and Politics is a lively, dynamic, contemporary A Level course that will inform you about the way Government works and how political decisions affect your life.
The breadth of issues explored is vast, you will be encouraged to develop your own opinions and get involved in debate.
Keeping up to date with events is crucial, "a week is a long time in politics". By selecting, organising and deploying material from newspapers, radio and television, you will develop the essential skill of advancing and defending an argument. Ultimately, you will have a deeper understanding of the society in which you live.

Visit to a Politics conference costs approximately £20. Revision courses approximately cost £20.
Course Content and Assessment Details
Government & Politics AS course is a linear course. Both the AS and A2 courses cover the key issues and developments that shape the British and International political systems. These include political, social, economic, legal, philosophical and historical aspects. Central are the ideas of citizenship, democracy and participation.
AS Level Course
This consists of two units, all assessed by written examination. Each unit is worth 50% of the AS grade / 25% of the A2 grade. The units focus on:
- Unit 1 - People Politics and Participation
- Unit 2 - Governing Modern Britain
The AS may be studied as a coherent one year course or as part of the A2 course.
A2 Level Course
In order to progress to the A2 course, you must gain a minimum of a pass at AS Level. This course will provide progression in the ideas and issues explored in the AS. There are two units; each assessed by a written examination, which are equally weighted:
- Unit 3 - The Politics of the USA
- Unit 4 - The Government of the USA
An additional paper has been added to the course Political Ideas, looking at Conservatism, Socialism, Liberalism etc.
All three papers are assessed the same - two hour essay based exam.
